being in therapy

Dr. Catherine Cadart

Catherine is the founder of Being in Therapy and a licensed counselling psychologist proficient in both French (her mother tongue) and English, having earned her professional doctorate in counselling psychology from the University of East London in the United Kingdom.

She completed her BSc in psychology at the University Paris VIII in France, followed by an MSc in clinical psychology and an MSc in sexology at Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium.

Having lived and worked as an expatriate for over two decades in Belgium, Ireland, Morocco, the United Kingdom, and the USA, Catherine possesses a unique perspective shaped by experiences in both individualist and collectivist cultures. Her insights extend to how cultural nuances influence views on personal and professional success, as well as the impact of cultures on identity and well-being during transitions.

As an integrative psychologist, she draws on various therapeutic approaches, including third-wave cognitive-behaviour therapy, compassion-focused therapy, humanistic therapy, metacognitive therapy, mindfulness, and psychodynamic therapy, tailoring her methods to address the individual needs of her clients.

Working with individuals of all ages facing emotional and psychological challenges while living abroad, Catherine’s clinical work has centered on young adults, adults and older adults dealing with issues such as adjustment difficulties, anxiety, crisis identity, domestic abuse, excessive worrying, grief, general anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, rumination, depression, sexual concerns, suicidal ideation, and trauma.

Her therapeutic approach emphasizes creating a warm and welcoming environment for open discussions about clients’ painful experiences. Catherine places a strong value on human connection and the quality of relationships in therapy. She is sensitive to individual needs, recognising the diversity of experiences and the impact of available emotional and physical resources on coping and responding in life. While drawing on her expertise, Catherine believes in collaborative work, empowering individuals to gain a better understanding of their emotional and psychological needs, make informed changes in their lives, and lead more fulfilling ones.

Before transitioning into psychology in 2012, Catherine held leadership roles in the private sector and accumulated extensive experience working with organisations, employers, and managers. She completed a BSc and MSc in Social Economic Administration and Law in France. During these years she often met exhausted people, out of breath, who no longer believed in their work, in their career choice. She was confronted with people at risk of burnout (exhausted) or brown-out (loss sense at work), or even sometimes bore-out (boredom at work). The responsibilities of human resources, she found, required attentiveness to the potential suffering of individuals, leading her to pursue psychology to address their psychological concerns.

With a combination of international experience, human resources expertise, coaching, and psychological knowledge, Catherine is equipped to understand and navigate individual and organisational dilemmas worldwide. Like all psychological professionals, she undergoes clinical supervision to ensure ethical practice informed by the scientific evidence. This includes supervision by a senior therapist and peer-to-peer supervision, as she continues to develop her clinical expertise through ongoing professional development.
